Self-Care Sunday: How to Practice Spiritual Self-Care

I want to take a moment to thank Rachel at Rach Talks Business. My post on spiritual self-care is just one in a series of posts on self-care. Many different bloggers have participated and added their thoughts and suggestions for self-care. To read them all you can go to the post that started it all, Self-Care Sunday: The Big Blog Share .

Self-Care

Self-care means different things to different people. For some itโ€™s a glass of wine, a good book and a bubble bath. For others itโ€™s working out then enjoying a Buddha Bowl at their favourite vegan restaurant.

What I think everyone can agree on, however, is that self-care is vital to both our physical and emotional wellbeing. But what about our spirit?

This is where spiritual self-care comes in.If you would like to know more about Spirituality and itโ€™s importance in our lives read my post Why is Spirituality Important? 6 Ways Spirituality Can Change Your Life!

What is Spiritual Self-Care?

Spiritual self-care is taking time to nurture your spirit. Focusing on your inner self and your connection to the Universe. It is a very personal experience that centres on your beliefs and needs, no one elseโ€™s. It will often reflect your ideologies and may change depending on where you are in your own personal journey.

By practicing spiritual self-care we are not only connecting to the Divine, but also our own true-self. We are getting to know and appreciate our authentic core-being. Not the person we show the world (the ego) but rather the truest, most beautiful part of ourselves. The part of us that wears no masks, that is open, honest and vulnerable. This is where our intuition comes from. It is our soul, our spirit, and our connection to the Universe.

Taking the time to nurture this part of ourselves, provides a sense of contentment, happiness and a deep connection with with everything around us.

How to Practice Spiritual Self-Care

So, how do we incorporate spiritual self-care into our lives?

First we need to decide what results we are looking for. Do you want to build a stronger connection with the Source? Then you may want to incorporate prayer and ritual into your spiritual self-care practice. However, if you are new to spirituality and are looking to find your own individual path, you may find meditation and learning more about spirituality is the direction you want to take. Maybe you are looking for a little comfort food for the soul. Rituals can provide that.

Once you decide on the results you want, you can chose which activities to incorporate into your routine. Finally, decide how often to practice spiritual self-care.

Your spiritual self-care needs may change along the way, and itโ€™s a good idea to reassess your practice now and then. Itโ€™s also fun to experiment with new things. Our spirituality can be expressed in a multitude of ways, so your spiritual self-care practice can be as individual as you are.

Ideas For Practicing Spiritual Self-Care

Meditation

I canโ€™t recommend meditation enough. A regular meditation routine can be life changing. It eliminates stress and anxiety, helps keep us fully present, and connects not only to Source, but also to our higher self. When we meditate we quiet the mind and are able to hear the whispers of our own intuition and the guidance of the Universe.

If you arenโ€™t sure how to meditate, there are apps available. You can also find guided mediations both for free and for sale. You can also follow along with my Loving-Kindness meditation on YouTube.

When meditating, donโ€™t worry about doing it wrong. The important part is the doing. If you take the time to meditate on a regular basis, you will reap the benefits and get better at it too. It only takes 10 minutes a day to have a huge impact.

Prayer

Prayer is another way we can practice spiritual self-care. Although many associate prayer with religion and the church, it is simply having a conversation with the Divine.

Prayer is simply having a conversation with the Divine

There are many types of prayer. Some use structured prayer, others just have a chat with Source. You can pray for guidance, asking the Divine for direction when you need it, or ask for help when you feel lost. Some pray for strength when faced with challenges, but the most powerful prayer of all is โ€œthank you!โ€

Gratitude

Gratitude is a wonderful way to practice spiritual self-care as it has one of the highest energy frequencies. When you express gratitude your vibrations sky rocket, making you feel great!โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €

Feeling great isn’t the only reason to express gratitude though. By raising your frequency and focusing on all the good in your life, you will be attracting more of the same into your reality. What you focus on is what you create.โ €โ €โ €

Rituals

Rituals are a great option for spiritual self-care.

Attending a religious service is one form of ritual, but you can also create your own. When creating your own rituals set an intention. It may be to release something like a habit, an emotion, belief, or even a person. You can have a ritual to seek clarity on a situation in your life. Or you may want to create a ritual to get to know your inner self a little better.

Create a sacred space

Create a sacred space by lighting candles, incense, playing ambient sounds.

It is important to bring elements into your ritual that make you feel good. Your ritual can include as many or as few elements as youโ€™d like. Here are a few elements you can include in your ritual:

  • Scented bath
  • Music
  • Drumming
  • Meditation
  • Dance
  • Chanting
  • Smudging
  • Journalling

Spiritual Learning

Spiritual learning consists of reading books on spirituality or spiritual growth, watching movies or shows that teach spiritual principles, taking a course or finding and spending time with a mentor.

There are so many fantastic ways to educate yourself about spirituality.

A Few More Ideas

It is good to use your intuition when looking for the perfect spiritual self-care activities. The best ideas will come from within you, but here are a few more ideas to get you started.

  • Time in Nature
  • Mindfulness
  • Music & Dance
  • Quiet Contemplation
  • Smudging or other Energy Clearing Practice
  • Reiki
  • Forgiveness
  • Journalling
  • Energy Work
  • Creative Endeavours (painting, colouring, sculpture, collage etcโ€ฆ)
  • Yoga
  • Chakra Balancing
  • Walking Meditation

Final Thoughts

However you decide to practice spiritual self-care, it is important to remember the โ€œself-careโ€ part. This is not about advancing your spiritual practice or mastering a skill. It is about taking care of your spirit. Getting to know the person within and appreciating all the wonders that are you. So choose activities that make your spirit sing. Get creative and have fun!
